    Majidreza Rahnavard (1999–2022)

He was an Iranian citizen who became one of the most widely recognized victims of the Islamic Republic’s crackdown on the nationwide protests that followed the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022.

Born on June 16, 1999, Rahnavard was arrested after participating in the protests in Mashhad during the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement. Iranian authorities accused him of fatally stabbing two members of the Basij militia during demonstrations in November 2022 and charged him with moharebeh (“waging war against God”), a capital offense under Iranian law.

Following a trial that lasted only a short period and was widely criticized by human rights organizations, Rahnavard was sentenced to death. Human rights groups, legal advocates, and international observers raised serious concerns regarding the fairness of the proceedings, alleging that he was denied meaningful access to legal counsel, subjected to coercion, and forced to participate in staged confessions. Reports from activists also alleged that he showed signs of physical abuse while in custody.

Rahnavard was known to have a Lion and Sun tattoo, an enduring symbol associated with Iran’s history, culture, and national identity. Supporters have often pointed to this tattoo as a reflection of his love for Iran and his connection to the country’s heritage. Following his death, the Lion and Sun became closely associated with his memory among many supporters of the freedom movement. Before his execution, Iranian state media broadcast a video in which Rahnavard delivered a message about how he wished to be remembered. In the recording, he asked that no one mourn at his grave, recite the Quran, or pray for him after his death. Instead, he requested that people celebrate his life with music, joy, and dancing. His final public message resonated deeply with many Iranians and became a lasting symbol of personal courage, defiance, and hope.

On December 12, 2022, at the age of 23, Majidreza Rahnavard was publicly executed in Mashhad. He became the first protester executed in public in connection with the 2022 nationwide protests and the second known protester executed overall, following the execution of Mohsen Shekari.

Today, Rahnavard is remembered by many Iranians as a symbol of resistance, courage, and sacrifice. His birthday, June 16, is commemorated annually by supporters in Iran and around the world through memorial gatherings, cultural events, and tributes celebrating his life and the values for which he is remembered. For many, he represents a generation’s aspiration for freedom, dignity, and justice.
